일심 일체 일념
[il shim, il che, il nyeom]
一心一體一念
Etymology
心 (심) – soul
體 (체) – body
念 (념) – thought
In life, people strive to achieve goals, but often do not achieve them, one reason being that the standpoint is constantly changing. As one’s viewpoint changes, so does one’s direction, and because of this, one’s goal changes. It is difficult for a person to reach a goal even if he has one opinion; how much more difficult it would be if he was to have two!
Therefore, we must first completely unite our soul and body to reach the state that can be described as “unity in soul, unity in body, unity in aspiration.”
일심 – a unified soul, the internal and external aspect of the human soul must be absolutely united.
일체 – means unified body with the soul. The body must absolutely follow the soul. The body must merge with the soul. Thus, there is a union of the body with the unified soul and this is reflected in actions. Actions always say more than words.
일념 – means thoughts united with purpose. Unified way of thinking is based on a unified soul and a unified body. We need one standpoint, one worldview. It must be the same morning, noon, and evening, in youth, in our mature years, and in our old age.
In the pursuit of a certain goal, we must always act with a unified soul. If we do not have this attitude, we will not reach the goal. From this, we can conclude that the Creator created our world based on one ideology, not two. To achieve any one goal, we must take up the cause with a united heart and move forward in one direction. Nevertheless, people these days are incapable of maintaining an unchanging attitude.
If a person takes on a task with one attitude, carries it out with the same attitude, and, without changing the attitude, achieves the result, his goals will grow and become larger because he will be able to maintain an unchanging attitude for longer and longer periods of time.
